Introduction

An hour north of Christchurch on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand sits the Waipara Valley which experiences the long dry growing season found in the most famous wine regions of the world. On the northwest facing slopes of these limestone-studded hills and in the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, you’ll find the home of Grey’s Peak Wines.

The Vineyard

With plantings from 60m to 150m above sea level, and soil profiles varying from Glasnevin clay to soils rich in limestone, special attention is paid to microclimatic opportunities. The benefits of this attention can be seen in exciting wines with low pH levels resulting in beautiful natural structure and brilliance which are directly attributable to these unique sites.

The Wines

Grey's PeakRecently described in Decanter Magazine as “Waipara’s most exciting new producer” the Grey’s Peak team are passionate about the environment and are committed to producing wines that are an expression of where the grapes are grown.
This passion extends to fishing the rivers, skiing the mountains and hunting the hills of the beautiful Waipara region, and sitting down afterwards with a few friends, a good meal and a glass or two of wine ...

The People

Dominic Maxwell looks after winemaking and is the token cricket nut. When it gets too cold to hammer the wickets into the ground you can find him clutching his snowboard in desperate search of the white stuff.
Nick Gill (viticulturalist) hails from the South Australian heartland of the Barossa Valley. He has crossed the ditch to NZ to fish trout and stalk deer and in his spare time develop and manage 45 hectares of Greystone vineyard! This man of the land managed the majority of Penfolds Grange vineyards in Australia. Say no more!
