Introduction

Gibson Wines is a small family owned winery nestled at the high northern end of the Barossa Valley in South Australia.  With some of the oldest vineyards in the region, the fruit is predominately estate grown, resulting in premium wines rich in flavor and complexity and truly reflective of Barossa character.

From pruning through to budburst and blending to bottling, the whole 'winegrowing' process is carefully tended by Rob “Gibbo” Gibson. Rob has an intimate understanding of the many factors that can influence the creation of wine and has a passion for identifying and protecting what is left of the original vineyard plantings in wine regions around Australia. The wines crafted at his small 'Barossavale' estate are a reflection of this accumulated knowledge, experience and natural curiosity!

The Producer

GibsonsRob Gibson has around 25 years experience making superb Barossa wines, not least of which included 20 years at Penfolds where he was involved in winemaking (with the likes of Max Schubert and John Duval) and as chief viticulturalist. In this role he was responsible for nurturing the Shiraz vines that contributed to Penfolds Grange and for the establishment of the Penfolds Technical Viticultural Dept in 1992. This was a formidable background from which he launched his own company, Barossavale, to produce wines under his own label together with his wife, Anne (also with an impressive industry background).

Rob also operates a thriving, international winegrowing consultancy business, through which he has access to extensive fruit sources throughout the Barossa regio

The Wines

Rob’s winemaking philosophy is very much about the quality of the fruit source and maximizing flavor through the careful management of soil and water.
The Australian Old Vine Collection is taking Rob to the oldest corners of Australia’s established wine-growing regions including the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and McLaren Vale. His self-imposed task is to identify and document and, more excitingly, vinify grapes from the remnants of original plantings in each major district.
